vicenews:

The US Department of Justice may be strong-arming banks into banning porn stars.

When I read this, I was immediately reminded of the downfall of insex, kink.com’s predecessor of sorts. Taken from here:

Insex.com was essentially shut down by the government using the Patriot Act.  Homeland Security claimed that violent porn financially supported terrorism (without any evidence to support this theory), and they sent letters to banks warning them that they may be supporting terrorism by processing credit card payments from insex.com.  Under the Patriot Act, if Homeland Security believes a bank is facilitating terrorism (by passing money through the bank), they can go and inspect the bank records.  Instead of taking that chance, the banks refused to process credit cards used at insex.com. This ultimately shut down the site because nobody could pay to use it.

So the government shut down a website without taking any legal action (which may have triggered First Amendment issues if they did seek legal recourse).  They simply had to threaten to take action against a third party to shut down insex.com.  This should frighten all of us (and I am not trying to sound like a crazy Tea Party member!).

I guess my point is that the Justice Department under George W Bush, especially during the John Ashcroft era, was even worse… Sooner or later an R will get back in the White House. So I look at Tumblr - based in US, very lax about depictions of sexuality, etc - and I see a ticking time bomb.
